- Those who live on the bounty of others
- Those who live by begging
Jesus is teaching His people that they live by asking. Too often, we are chided by others’ instruction of prayer who say, “prayer should not merely be about asking.” And they are of course right. However, my fear is that in our attempt to not be characterized by begging and asking the Father, we have minimized the goodness of God, who desires to give Hid kids good gifts (see Matthew 7:11).
“Prayer is the Christian’s vital breath” — E.M. Bounds.
Jesus exemplifies the nature and daily necessity of prayer. His personhood is a continual reminder that the more devoted a man/woman is to God, the more prayerful they will be; from the beginning of His ministry, to when the Holy Spirit descended upon Him, the moments prior to the transfiguration, to the choosing of the disciples, and His time in the garden of Gethsemane and so on, we see Jesus was a man of prayer.
If we are to call ourselves “Christians” we too, ought to be men and women of prayer.
