22 quotes (1 from each chapter) from J. Oswald Sander’s book Spiritual Leadership: Principles Of Excellence For Every Believer.

  1. True greatness, true leadership, is found in giving yourself in service to others, not in coaxing or inducing others to serve you.
  2. If the world is to hear the church’s voice today, leaders are needed who are authoritative (know where they’re going and how to get there), spiritual (they have a strong relationship with God), and sacrificial (following the model of Jesus who gave Himself to others).
  3. Effective spiritual leadership does not come as a result of theological training or seminary degree but God’s sovereignty.
  4. A leader is a person who has the ability to get others to do what they don’t want to do, and like it – President Harry S. Truman.
  5. How we handle relationships tells us a lot about our potential for leadership.
  6. If you would rather pick a fight than solve a problem, do not consider leading the church. The Christian leader must be genial and gentle, not a lover of controversy.
  7. A domineering manner, an unbridled ambition, an offensive strut, a tyrant’s talk – no attitude could be less fit for one who claims to be a servant of the Son of God.
  8. Lazy and disorganized people never rise to true leadership.
  9. Concerning relationships, tact is the ability to deal with people sensitively, to avoid giving offense, to have a feel for the proper words or responses to a delicate situation.
  10. Spiritual leadership requires Spirit-filled people. Other qualities are important; to be Spirit-filled is indispensable.
  11. The spiritual leader should outpace the rest of the church, above all, in prayer.
  12. The person who wants to excel must select and reject, then concentrate on the most important items.
  13. The leader should immerse himself in books hat equip him for higher service and leadership in the kingdom of God.
  14. The first step toward improvement is to recognize weaknesses, make corrections, and cultivate strengths.
  15. There is nothing else that so kills the efficiency, capability and initiative of a leader as destructive criticism…it tends to hamper and undercut the efficiency of man’s thinking process. It chips away at his self-respect and undermines his confidence in his ability to cope with his responsibilities.
  16. The frontiers of the kingdom of God were never advanced by men and women of caution – wife of Archbishop of Mowll.
  17. To everyone entrusted with spiritual authority, searching tests are bound to come.
  18. One facet of leadership is the ability to recognize the special abilities and limitations of others, combined with the capacity to fit each one into the job where he or she will do best.
  19. The true test of a person’s leadership is the health of the organization when the organizer is gone.
  20. Leadership training cannot be done a massive scale. It requires a patient, careful instruction and prayerful, personal guidance over a considerable time. Disciples are not manufactured wholesale. They are produced one by one, because someone has taken the pains to discipline, to instruct and enlighten, to nurture and train one that is younger.
  21. One of the repulsive manifestations of pride, egotism is the practice of thinking and speaking of oneself, magnifying one’s attainments and relating everything to the self rather than to God and God’s people. The leader who has long enjoyed the admiration of many followers stands in peril of this danger.
  22. Nehemiah was concerned for the welfare of others, empathetic, had keen insight, was a realist, a man of prayer, a vigorous administrator and could make decisions.

  1. How cool would it be if decades from now our children and grandchildren remembered Easter 2020 – more than Corona virus? Instead of the pandemic; the birth of a new world wide Easter tradition – “Rise Up & Sing”!

As most of us won’t be sitting down with our family and friends for our traditional Easter dinner. What if we could coordinate radio stations across the country, and perhaps the world; to play “Amazing Grace” at high noon Sunday, April 12? We could line our streets (six feet apart of course), stand outside our homes, have our back yard speakers blaring, car radios, phones going and all singing!!! What joy to see cities, towns and neighborhoods come alive to praise God!!!

The credit for this idea goes to the men’s Bible study group at; “The Water’s Edge Church” in Omaha NE.

We* are requesting radio and media stations to consider extending the noon “Rise Up & Sing” Easter event: into an hour of Easter hymns and songs from Noon-1 p.m.

Can we count on you to help promote “Rise Up & Sing” and create a wave of praise from time-zone to time-zone?
Please spread the word and contact your local radio stations to play “Amazing Grace” at noon on Easter Sunday.
