Two principles from Proverbs 16 that will help you/I use social media in a godly manner (and really all areas of life):
First, a wise person seeks to be discerning (what to say, how to say it, when to say it, the why of saying it). And wisdom, according to the Bible is pure, peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and goodness, impartial, and sincere (James 3:17). Would people characterize your social media presence as gentle, peaceable, open to reason, or would they characterize it as contentious, argumentative, and unwilling to have civil dialogue?
Second, a wise person understands that the sweetness of speech increases persuasiveness. Social media, as well as text and email, removes 1) tone and 2) non-verbals, which means you/I need to be thoughtful about how we should use words, particularly if our aim is to influence people to consider and choose Jesus (and it is or at least it should be). Therefore, you/I should be diligent in leveraging the “space” of social media with sweetness. The opposite of sweetness is to be harsh, unfriendly, unpleasant, discourteous, or even aloof with one’s words.
I want to be wise. I want to be sweet. I want to be gracious. I want to be judicious. I want to be persuasive.
I hope that is your heart as well. Perhaps ask someone, does Proverbs 16:21, 22-23, and James 3:17) characterize my social media presence and really my life? If not, perhaps it might be a great time to make some changes.
