I read Richard Baxter’s The Reformed Pastor several years ago and as I read it I underlined a number of sentences, as well as wrote wow, ouch and many other words due to the insight Baxter offered. If you haven’t read it I’d encourage you to do so. To make it easy I’ve uploaded The Reformed Pastor as a FREE pdf so you can…
As a pastor whose primary job is to preach the word I struggle from week-to-week with questions I can ask to determine the “effectiveness” of my preaching. Dr. Lawless’ questions are questions that 1) I’m going to implement in a weekly evaluation of my preaching and 2) questions I’m going to give to some men in…
1. God has spoken to man, and the Bible is his Word, given to us to make us wise unto salvation. 2. God is Lord and King over his world; he rules all things for his own glory, displaying his perfections in all that he does, in order that men and angels may worship and adore…
What are the long-term results of anger or as Jerry Bridges calls it in his book Respectable Sins: Confronting The Sins We Tolerate, “weeds of anger”? Bridges’ selected the word “weeds” because they seem to be a nuisance that you constantly have to get rid of, with the obvious correlation that the following “weeds of anger” will…
This was shared with me this morning — I wanted to pass it on. Thanks for reading. Heartbroken. Discouraged. Forgotten. That’s how I feel today. Ken Blanchard and Phil Hodges in their book Lead Like Jesus: Lessons from the Greatest Leadership Role Model of All Tim write that “pride and fear always separate us from God, from each other, and us from ourselves” (58). What does this look like? How does pride and fear separate us from God? Too ashamed about failure to…
Many of us remember when we were little the adult table and the kid table at Thanksgiving or Christmas dinners. It was always an exciting time when we “graduated” from the kid table to the adult table. No more seating assignments next to little Johnny where you were expected to help him eat his food and…
The writer of Hebrews tell us that the hope we have in Jesus serves as an anchor for our soul (6:19). And yet, many Christians live day-to-day feeling as if their circumstances leave them hopeless. Hope, for a Christian, is the expectation of something good. Hope is woven into the fabric of who we are as…
Here’s some background to Acts 26:1-32 which is the passage I’ll be drawing several principles from when sharing your faith: Paul receives permission to speak from King Agrippa. He informs Agrippa and the rest of the audience that he counts himself fortunate to make his defense before the king, who is acquainted with the customs and…
